We have identified multiple trends within our flight and maintenance operations that have reduced safety risk by using WBAT.

The Event Review Committee (ERC) develops many mitigations and corrective actions within a “just culture” environment. The largest trend reduction was in the area of air proximities. Through the reports, we were able to identify where the events were occurring and were able to change procedures to mitigate the risks.

How do you use the WBAT platform? We are currently using WBAT for ASAP but are in the planning stages of implementing a SMS VP.

Note: WBAT’s Safety Management System Implementation Manager (SMS IM) module supports SMS Voluntary Program (SMS VP)/Part 5 plans, assisting an organization as it works through all plan requirements.

What do you consider the most useful part of the WBAT platform? The reporting and transparency that the system allows is top notch. As we grow, these features allow us to share information between locations, having the potential to identify and mitigate issues.

Please identify a recent safety issue or problem you identified in your data:  We haven’t gotten to the point of having enough data in the system to identify a significant problem, but already the data has allowed us to show and track trends.

Please explain how you mitigated the issue or problem: What we’ve been able to capture as KPIs and utilizing the data we are getting is bringing a spotlight on the issues we’ve seen so far.

If your U.S.-based Part 145 Repair Station holds or is seeking EASA certification, the clock is ticking. A new EASA ruling now requires all EASA Part 145 repair stations to establish, implement, and maintain a Safety Management System (SMS) that complies with 14 CFR Part 5 to meet the terms of the U.S.-EU Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement. Existing certificate holders must integrate and implement an SMS by December 31, 2025, while new certification applicants after February 10, 2025, must meet the SMS requirement at time of application.

Jeff Rafferty (Assistant Manager of SMS Program Office, AFS-910) discussed the intricacies of FAA regulations, focusing on Part 5 compliance. His presentation emphasized the core principles of SMS and the pivotal role of fostering a positive safety culture within organizations.

Corey Jones (owner of Safetyman Consulting LLC) provided valuable insights into proactive crisis management strategies. His session, complemented by a hands-on workshop, equipped professionals with techniques to detect and mitigate risks before they escalated into serious issues.

Jenn Trallo Schreiber (Quality and Safety Consultant, Quality Insights, LLC) shared her extensive knowledge on preventing workplace violence through a systems-thinking approach. Tiffany Whilden (Director of Safety, Ryan Air) shared insights on creating scalable and simplistic SMSs that prioritize purpose, people, and performance, guiding organizations through the SMS compliance process.

Melvin Rodriguez (CEO, Nexus Software Systems) and Robin Schelling (CEO, SAP Safety & Consulting) provided a critical overview of the necessity for drug and alcohol testing within safety initiatives, emphasizing the proactive role safety professionals must play in promoting awareness and compliance.
